Deer Valley 2018 Ski Trip

It's the wonderful time of year again - the time of year when we go skiing!  Of course sadly this was from a month ago, but hey - better late than never!

It was Deer Valley again this year, which is absolutely one of our favorite places to go, and we're delighted now that everyone is old enough to come with us!  Addison is pretty excited as well and loves to ski!  We usually head out Sunday morning bright and early, but the flights were completely full so we took a flight out Saturday night late....

We're excited to go - waiting in the Orlando airport for Daddy to park the car!

There is a pretty water fountain in the airport lobby that you can watch the birds fly around, so we were enjoying this while we waited!
There are the lost members of the family - and of course Addison's gum - you can see she is excited to be showing off her gum in the picture!
We met Korey (Karis' brother) in Salt Lake City and stayed at the same hotel that night, so that we could get up bright and early to hit the rental shop at 7A and then get out to Brighton before ski lessons at 10:15.  It is a 45 minute drive, so we were happy to be on the road by 8:15, thinking we were very proud of ourselves.  Proud of ourselves until we realized that it was snowing like crazy (which we knew) but that because it was snowing, everyone who lives in Utah also decided to go skiing that day!  It took FOREVER to slowly crawl up the mountain towards the resort.  We finally got to the entrance of the pass where you drive up to the mountain (almost FOUR HOURS LATER!), and then became stuck once again.    Korey and Amy were antsy sitting in the SUV, so they separately both got out of the truck (Korey first, with Amy trailing behind after a few minutes of additional cabin fever) and hiked up the mountain.  They discovered that an SUV had made it past the cop at the bottom of the mountain, who clearly thought that the suburban had 4 wheel drive, which it did not!!!!, and it slid right off the side of the road (thankfully into the mountain instead of off the mountain).  It took about 30 minutes to pull it out and then we were on our way again.  We made it there at 12:45, just in time to race up and get some food into the kids before they made it to their afternoon ski lesson.

Our day at Brighton was lovely - it is a great mountain, and we decided to get a picture of the group - Js, Cs, and two sets of the Zs.  We also skied with Reeves, but they weren't in this particular picture.

The kids were super excited, and with how good the boys are getting, Zachary did just one day of lessons and Kaleb did two - while Addison did all days of lessons except Thursday.  She believes that she may be the next Lindsay Vonn or something!  She would get out of her lessons every day and then insist on going skiing again with us until the lifts closed!
Here she is, crouching with to go faster!

"Dabbing" down the mountain with Kaleb.  And Elin is in the front of the picture with the unicorn helmet on!
Not only is Addison "posing" as she goes down the mountain, but on Wednesday when we were skiing after lessons, she was taunting poor Kaleb (who is a great little skier!!!) saying "Come on slowpoke, can you catch up to me!?"  That burned poor Kaleb, because of course he is a faster and better skier than she is!

No trip to Deer Valley is complete without going to the Gorgoza tubing hill - we just have a blast there, and this year was no exception. In fact, this was one of the fastest years that we have had on the slopes - just flying down the runs!
we closed the tubing hill down that night!
At the end of the Deer Valley vacation every year, Zachary has formed a "tradition" that he must ski down Big Stick run, which is a double-blue run at the very end.  Amy did it with him a few years ago (praying her way down, as it can be death-defying if you're not a super confident skier), so now he cajoles her each year to do it with him.  This year was no different, except for the fact that the whole family was going down.  The run veers off to "Little Stick" which is easier right before the double-blue portion, but before Amy could blink an eye, Addison had skied right down Big Stick instead of staying to the right, so Amy had no choice but to follow her down.  Thankfully Amy is no longer praying her way down -- although it still isn't a slam dunk if the snow is icy -- but she was still praying this year as Addison is only in her SECOND year of skiing!  What is this girl thinking?!  But, she made it down like a champ without falling, although it clearly tired her out because when we stopped to take a family picture and she insisted on doing it from the "prone" position! :)

We all made it!!  Big Stick is directly behind Amy's head in the background.
We are blessed on this trip as we have lots of friends that come to the conference as well, and some that just come even though they aren't in the conference!  Cs have always come, Ds used to (mission trip this year) and then some new friends of ours the Wanderslebens.  Our kids love them, with Zachary and their son being close and Addison loving their daughter!  Such fun memories!

Over the course of the week there were lots of lift pictures taken of us as we enjoyed a break for our screaming thighs....

Amy, Karis and Kaleb

One day Amy and Kelli skied with Erica - super fun!

Gianna and Addison had an awesome time skiing together!

At the very end of one day....this girl closed it down every single day!

We were thankful, having three kids at different ski levels did make it tricky, so there were times when Kaleb or Zach would tag along with someone else - this portion of a day it was Kaleb with Heather and Kieran!  Thanks!

Kelli, Amy and Heather

A rare moment in which Amy, Zach and Kaleb were all on a lift together.  Zach has so far surpassed Amy that he usually only is with her at the beginning or end of the day! :)

Kent got a go-pro this year, and so we all had a blast watching the videos of all of us skiing, and wiping out, at the end of the week.  Thanks for the good fun!

Random pictures;

this is Addison's favorite hiding spot for her treasures....and apparently also herself on the occasional day! One night Addison took our house phone, left it on and hid it in the buffet.  At 4:30 AM, Amy awoke to the beeping sound (about every 1 minute, so not frequent enough to identify where it was coming from quickly, but too frequent to sleep through).  Amy was wandering around the house looking for the source of the beeping, even turning on her phone flashlight, when Karis finally woke up and strode out with purpose to the dining room where Amy had narrowed the sound down to, and opened the door and sure enough - there was the phone!  Amy was wishing at that moment that he had woken up earlier as she was so awake at that point that she never did go back to sleep :(
Playing a game in the pool - they had to hide their faces, throw a rocket and then dash around to see who could get it out of the water first.

Gymnastics in front of the Biris house!  Pretty good arm strength!

The Compassion Experience

A few weeks ago, we joined our friends to go and walk through the Compassion Experience.  It was a travelling exhibit that allowed you to immerse yourself into a life of an underprivileged child living in a third world country - listening to their story in their words.  It was a powerful reminder of our blessed we are, and to be grateful for the advantages we have been given.  We were thankful we could go - thanks for the invitation!

The kids listened with rapt attention

as did the adults!

We were ready to experience!

These two are getting big so fast - and David is taller than Amy now!!

Zachary's varsity basketball season ended with a chance for him to go to the Magic basketball court and play on the Amway center stadium floor.  It was a pretty fun experience for them!
And that night, they stayed for the FLEC grade 4-5 choir to be able to sing the national anthem for the Magic game!

It was a fun experience as they were playing Toronto, so we got to hear them sing AND hear the Canadian anthem as well - O Canada! :)

After singing the national anthem, the kids joined us in the FH box where we had been invited by our friends the Wanderslebens.

The eye roll from Zachary for having to take one more picture.....

Amy's aunt Elaine and Uncle Murray had come down for the week, so Uncle Murray joined us at the game (Aunt Elaine was spending the night with Amy's cousin Jeff and Niesha to help with the baby).  As the box was full, Karis and Uncle Murray sat in the other FH Loge seats, where you get free food and drinks all night!

Enjoying the food!~

Kind of cool that it was a Canadian team that they were able to watch together!
That Friday night we had the family over, and it was the first time that Addison was able to meet baby Sadie in person, as we have kept the kids away to save Sadie from germs for the first few weeks of her life - plus our kids were fighting allergies and had coughs, so we decided it was best to keep Sadie germ-free......so when they arrived Addison was over the moon with excitement!

Oh no, he is now taller than Aunt Elaine too!

Meeting her for the first time!

Goodness - how precious, and it is amazing to think that our baby used to be that small too!  They grow too fast!

The evening is never boring with Jeff around!

Zachary was excited to be able to hold her for a little bit as well!
In other news, Zachary had a soccer tournament down at Disney's Wide World of Sports a few weeks ago.  It was a fun experience - and Disney never does anything poorly, so it was a "wow" experience for sure.  The boys being in their first season had been put into the worst division of their local soccer league - which meant they were winning each game handily with very little effort.  Well, at the Disney tournament the coach put them into the level that he believed was more appropriate, and they had a wake-up call for playing against some REAL competition!  They won 1 game out of the 3 that they played, but you could see them really start to kick in their competitive drive as they got their feet "wet" with playing against soccer teams that were just as good as they were.  This season they have moved up within their local league to a higher level, so they are continuing to get some better competition and starting to hone their skills.

After the conclusion of the weekend - thanks Coach!

Disney grass is perfect!
The same weekend as the Disney tournament, Karis took Kaleb and Addison to meet a college friend of his who flew in from Seattle for supper.  On the way, he was sitting at a left hand turn waiting for the light to turn green when all of a sudden the car behind him decided that he didn't want to wait any longer and jumped the curb on the boulevard, drove past Karis - scraping the side of Amy's car all along the way, and then the car did a quick U-Turn and took off in the opposite direction!   We were so thankful that the family wasn't hurt  - but how frustrating to now have to spend money to fix your car!  People are nuts for sure.  You just never expect to get in an "accident" sitting stone still!

The IHS Executive team at FH that Amy works with.  Great team!

Our little scientist!

A new way to sit and watch TV.....so comfy right? Weird child! Ha ha ha!

Enjoying the pool already - life in Florida!

Zachary and Blake.  Blake must have decided that getting into the pool was for crazy Canadians only! :)

Celebrating Lena Babiuk

First off, "No", the Zbaraschuk blog hasn't been discontinued.  But it is clear that when the Zs are away on the weekends, the blog just isn't happening.  And we have been gone ----- a lot the last two months.  We apologize! We will slowly but surely start bringing it back up to date but our first post is to pause from the normal hectic activities that we do to celebrate a very special lady - Lena Babiuk.  Amy's grandmother on her father's side passed away in the beginning of March.

Growing up, Amy was blessed to have such a grandmother - she was warm, loving, and set an awesome Christian example of dedicating one's life to Him.  During Amy's growing up years, she remembers when Lena (and Grandpa Peter who passed away many years ago now) would come to visit and we'd spend many hours playing games such as Tri-Ominoes and Skip-Bo - laughing and bonding.

Grandma and Grandpa also loved to fish, and would jump into their camper van and head off for trips and fishing excursions whenever they wished.  They tried to teach Amy how to fish, but it never seemed to work - with Amy never catching a fish! Once Amy cast the hook and managed to catch Grandma's ear - NOT so good but he patiently unhooked himself and kept teaching her how to fish. The closest that Amy came was one time when SHE fell out of the boat and they had to fish HER out of the water! :)  That was a lively experience as Amy did not have on a life jacket - although let's be clear, Amy could swim and it was shallow enough that she didn't even get her hair wet....but Grandma's exclamations still ring in Amy's ears with clarity! :)

Grandma was a perogie making machine - and they honestly were the best perogies that have ever been made.  How she could make so many dozens over the years - it had to number in the 10s of thousands I am sure!  She tried to teach the rest of us, but they never did have quite the same delicious texture and taste as hers.

As she aged, she never complained about anything, and always would say "I am good, no aches and no pains" and would go on brisk walks, even in the winter when she lived in the lodge in Lacombe near the CUC campus.  One time when Amy was talking to her on the phone she explained how she fell into a deep snow bank in the ditch on morning on her walk and had a difficult time getting out - all while she was in her 80s!

We had the opportunity to go up and see her last summer - and while her memory was mostly gone with dementia, it was still such a blessing to be able to see her sweet face one more time and to tell her that we loved her.

What Amy will always remember the most, is that Grandma (and Grandpa) opened their arms, their heart and their love to Amy when her mom married into the family and welcomed her into the family as if she had never been NOT part of the family.  After that time, Amy wasn't just an adopted grand-daughter, she was simply their grand-daughter.  This special lady made a difference in my life and she will be incredibly missed.  We look forward to the day in which God comes back to this earth that we can be reunited with our loved ones.  I love you Grandma!

Amy went through her pictures from the years and pulled out a few from our other visits over time for a walk down memory lane.

Visiting Grandma in Ontario while she was at the Lysiuks - Zach was just a little guy then!

Amy and her cousin Jeff, who also lives here in Orlando, went up to the funeral in frigid Canada (why is it always minus 30 when we go up there!?) for her funeral on Good Friday.  It was a wonderful time to remember her, and to catch up with family members.  The trip was uneventful thankfully even with the howling blizzard on the Friday when the funeral was held.  Amy's cousin Kim is an ultra marathon trail runner - she went out running 7 miles even in the blowing snow - now that is dedication for you!

Jeff - always a hoot - hamming it up while driving to the farm wearing Amy's sunglasses (it WAS really bright with the white snow!)
