Food Festival and Family Visit

The junior class has a major fundraiser to help raise funds for various trips and activities between Junior and Senior year.  Zachary is a junior so we were inducted into the international food festival process!  Amy volunteered to help decorate and then to serve desserts during the actual event.

Handsome dessert server!

Amy's uncles Jim and Don came down to visit, which was a lovely time to catch up with family.  We haven't seen them in a few years so it was nice for them to be able to come down and stay with Grandma Bobbi.

Uncle Jim always had a soft spot for Addison

It was Uncle Jim's birthday when he was here - happy birthday!

We also had a very belated Christmas gift exchange with the Js and Cs - the kids all had the fun "crackers' so we had them put on their crowns for a corny picture 😂

A New Way of Life - Celiac

Last August, Addison went to her normal pediatrician and it was noted that she wasn't gaining weight.  She had just started playing soccer so we didn't think much about it other than to start watching for her weight trends over time. We noticed that indeed she wasn't gaining much weight as the months passed, and Amy switched to a new primary care doctor late in the year and was so impressed as he explored ideas with her about Addison's height and weight (even though it was Amy's appointment!) that we decided to switch over all of the kids to him.

He was super thorough and ordered a bunch of tests (13 blood vials!) and immediately one came back with extreme allergies to gluten, which set off a journey to determine what exactly was going on.  The title of this blog post gives away the end result sadly.  We went to a pediatric GI doctor who got her in for an endoscopy and confirmed that she had celiac.  It was a big surprise to us as she hadn't really been having a lot of issues, although recently she had said that after eating breaded chicken that her stomach hurt - but other than a handful of times of a stomach ache she hadn't had any noticeable symptoms.  Who knew - apparently Karis' side of the family carries the gene and indeed when we tested her for the gene she carries two copies.  It is difficult to know exactly when the "on button" was switched but the doctor is guessing that perhaps 2022, which led us to wonder if perhaps one of the times that she got Covid if that switched the button to "on".

IV in, monitors on, ready to go!  What a trooper!

Finishing her "nap" - procedure was about 30 minutes in total

Awake and ready to roll again!

Since having her switch over to gluten-free, she has gained 6 pounds in about 2 months, which is tremendously encouraging. She has more energy (which she already had a lot of energy) and is growing in height (up to 4 ft 11 inches!)

While it is an unfortunate reality of life, we are thankful that there are so many gluten free options now out in the market.  We had tried going gluten free during Covid, so we aren't starting from scratch in our knowledge which is another blessing!  We are going to look on the bright side, and although Addison did have some moments of sadness, which is totally normal, she has taken it in stride.  Thankfully most of the things that are hard to replace are things that she doesn't like very much (one example is that she doesn't like donuts!).

Principal's List

In high school, if you maintain a 3.9 GPA or higher, you receive a Principal's Award.  Kaleb had a 4.0 the first semester (and ended the year with a 4.0) and thus he was an award recipient.  Kaleb is very driven and has set a goal for himself to have a 4.0 for the four years - whether he achieves it or not we're proud of him putting in the effort to just do his best.

Valentine's Day

The church has been hosting an annual Valentine's Day event now for several years under Pastor Jennifer's direction and this year was an 80s theme.  Thank goodness that these styles have left us behind - although one friend got her outfit from Target -- neon and all, so I guess it isn't totally behind us.

Karis with hair.....and Amy with slouchy shirt and rolled socks, and the side pony!

In this we have the boxy suit jacket and then Don Johnson!
Cindy Lauper (aka Pastor Jennifer)
Intense....but who can take Karis seriously in that wig!?

We also had the chance to celebrate a beautiful friend Vasti turning a milestone birthday!  We've so enjoyed this family over the years - what a blessing to have them in our friend circle.  May God bless you richly Vasti!

Their oldest son was away at college, so not pictured here.

Aria Arrives

Addison caught Amy in a moment of weakness and distraction one day when she started to beg for a lizard gecko of all things as a pet -- Amy responded with "no way, you'd have better luck getting a puppy than a lizard!"  Well, you can well imagine where that went.  Amy is very well versed in how to say "no" but the more we thought about it, we decided that perhaps a puppy would be a good addition to the family so we began the process.  Kaleb wanted a bernedoodle (Amy is allergic to dogs so it had to be a hypoallergenic dog for sure) and as we researched their personalities, we decided its mix of playfulness and relaxed spirit would be a good fit.  Next we found a breeder Crockett Doodles (thanks to our friend Lisa) that had puppies with the qualities that we were hoping for - mix of playful and relaxed, female, and would have the black, brown and white coloring and a MEDIUM size.  Medium size was important as the male Zs wanted a big dog and the ladies wanted a small dog - so Amy said let's meet in the middle.   We found just the right pup - Aria, and even better is that she had an A name already - which means that all of the ladies in the Z family have an A name!  She is supposed to be 35-55 lbs but looking at her paws, pretty sure she will be all of 55 pounds by the time that she is done growing!

This is the picture of Aria at around 10 weeks.

She arrived late January much to Addison's delight  and was about 12-13 weeks old.  Amy spent the few weeks prior trying to "puppy proof" the house, it was like nesting for a new baby but with all of the small things around we needed to de-clutter so that she wouldn't have choking hazards or things to chew on everywhere.  Zachary was pretty happy to have a dog as well, but Kaleb was non too pleased to now have a puppy to deal with potty accidents, chewing mishaps, and lots of mouthing/nipping.    Stone cold Kaleb is what we teasingly called him for a few weeks, although he is now warming up to her.

She has arrived!

Getting to know one another

When the puppy arrived, Amy had a grand idea of putting the dog in a crate in the foyer just outside of our room.  Well, we learned on night 1 that Aria is a people dog and does NOT like to be by herself - she whined and barked and howled in the middle of the night.  We thought "maybe she'll stop" but she didn't until Addison woke up and came to ask "can't you hear Aria barking?"  Yes, yes, yes we can.  So Amy went out and laid down on the tile beside her crate so that Addison could go back to bed -- and then repeated it again the next night.  Two nights on hard tile - forget it, and we had to move the crate into our bedroom just so that we could have some sleep.  Having a dog in our room with the rustling, clinking of the crate, panting of the dog -- it was rough sleeping for a while until she aged to a point that Amy had had enough and moved her into a pen in our living room.  What a dream, blessed quiet sleep again after several months!

The crate all ready to go

Loving on the dog!

Why are we picking her up like a baby is what I want to know!?

So far having a dog has been an adjustment, but a fairly happy one.  Figuring out what to do when we're out of town has been an interesting hurdle but one that we've managed so far, and Amy's Mom has decided that she is Grandma to Aria, so likely will take care of her most of the time when we're out of town.

So now the Z family has grown to 6 - evenly matched girls and boys!

iFly, Orchids & Candles!

The end of January we enjoyed lots of fun activities - which always is fun to create memories!

Addison had a trip to iFly (similar to what she did on the cruise).  She was able to go twice much to her delight.  Amy even had a chance to do it - always a fun time.  Perhaps it would be fun to do REAL skydiving (although perhaps just as terrifying!).

Getting her hands just right

January is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate birthdays - Grandma and little Sadie!

79 this year and going strong!

And turning a whopping 6 - how time flies!

We also had an outing to the Orchid festival for Pathfinders - who knew there were such variety and sizes!

One of Kaleb's favorites

Addison enjoys the winter session of indoor soccer - playing various positions during the game.

At Amy's hospital AH Winter Garden, there was a therapy animal day and they brought a miniature pet therapy horse!  How cute is this, look at her little "shoes!"
